Downloading. Next:
- Open Butter.dmg: click it in the download bubble at the top right of Chrome from your Downloads. A window opens with a big Butter icon. If Chrome says the file isn't commonly downloaded, choose Download suspicious file: Butter is new, so Chrome hasn't seen it before.
- Double-click Butter. It moves itself into Applications. If macOS says it can't verify it, click Done, then:Open Privacy & SecurityScroll to the bottom and click Open Anyway next to Butter.
- Follow the setup window. Three steps: about you, Accessibility, and connecting Claude. Each one ticks itself when it's done.
You'll need a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.
Pause, and it's there
Write the way you think, in English, Chinese or any other language. When you stop for a moment, Butter rewrites the paragraph you're in as natural, concise English and shows it right under your cursor.
It keeps your meaning, your tone, names, numbers, links and emoji. Casual stays casual.
- TabSwap it in. Only that paragraph changes.
- EscHide it.
- Keep typingIt steps aside until your next pause.
Replies, ready
Click into an empty reply box in Slack, Gmail, Outlook or Mail and Butter reads the conversation on screen, then offers three short replies: a yes, a different take and a good question. Pick one with the arrow keys and press Tab.
It writes [date] or [link] wherever you have something to fill in, and never makes up facts or promises.
Only the paragraph you're writing
- One paragraph at a time. Butter sends the paragraph at your cursor, or the visible conversation when you reply, and nothing else.
- Passwords stay out. Password fields, search boxes and address bars are skipped, and it starts off in AI chats, code editors and terminals, and never reads password managers.
- Your own Claude does the writing. The text goes to Claude under your own Claude plan. There is no Butter account and no Butter server.
Ready in five minutes
Open it once and a setup window walks you through the rest. After that Butter starts with your Mac and sits in the menu bar.
Download and open Butter

Questions
What does it cost?
Butter is free. The writing is done by Claude under the same plan you use in the Claude app (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise), so there's nothing else to pay for.
Where does it work?
In almost any text box: Slack, Gmail and other sites in Chrome, Outlook, Mail, LinkedIn, Notes and docs. Reply suggestions work in Slack, Gmail, Outlook and Mail.
Which languages can I type in?
Any. Chinese, Spanish or a mix with English all come back as natural English. Reply suggestions are written in the language of the conversation.
Can I choose where it works?
Yes. Choose apps in the butter menu switches whole kinds on or off (chat, email, docs, AI chats, code) or single apps and websites, so Gmail can stay on while chatgpt.com stays off. It starts off in AI chats, code editors and terminals, and never reads password managers.
What is About you for?
Your name, role and first language go into Butter's instructions to Claude, so the English sounds like you. They stay on your Mac.
